Hi Jez,

I had a similar experience back in the 60s, with a little Oldsmobile 
F-85 aluminum V8.  Finally figured out that it had a very small head 
gasket leak, so that coolant was leaking into one of the cylinders.  
There were no external signs of a leak anywhere.

Very frustrating!
