Country artists Montgomery Gentry played at our casino yesterday. Their
road crew was a hoot to work with - all good guys, all with a sense of
humour. So, I got the feeling they'd be open to a portrait. I got
Billy, the FOH sound engineer, and Jamie, the stage manager/production
manager.

I've only been shooting the FOH engineer in the past, but man, oh, man -
Jamie had a face that was screaming out for a photo. Totally the
weathered, storied road dog. I explained what I wanted - he was taken
aback that I actually wanted photos of the crew. Nobody asks for photos
of the crew! Which, I explained to him, is exactly why I like to get
these shots. There's always a story in those faces. So after he
realized I was serious, he was actually rather pleased that I wanted to
take his portrait and asked me to send him a copy.

The two most recent shots in "Music Is The Medicine" are from last
night. Billy's shot was frustrating - I don't know if they had actually
set the room lights dimmer than usual, or if the computer screen behind
him totally threw off the metering, but pulling his face out of the
darker exposure was tough, and not pretty in color. So, I tried with
Silver Efex and got something I can live with. It's not like I can go
back and shoot it again.

I think I really, really need to experiment with using fill flash to
make the faces "pop" against the ambient room light and whatever light
is coming off the console. I just want the subject to be a stop or so
brighter without looking "flashed". That will also let me have less
noise in the face as well. Need to find me a tutorial online.
