RFID tags and a scanner at the door. There are a couple other tricks,
too. Same situation with using them for education. Apple makes a nifty
app/tool for this very purpose. They can't be repurposed without
getting bricked.

The moment the stolen iPad does it's "ET Phone Home" routine, it bricks.
