I'm late to this party, but Chuck's comment about upgrade and registration
issues just rang a bell. We dealt with this very issue on a number of
machines after a Microsoft office upgrade. It caused no end of trouble with
Excel files. I think that one is your answer, it reads like how we
eventually fixed things.
