I think I'd need to see it large but at a distance.  I prefer the 
second crop but I still hesitate to say I like it.  My brain wants to 
see it as a painting but it's not quite a painting (still too sharp) nor 
it is a photograph (which I want to be much sharper).  Maybe at larger 
size and proper distance it will look more painterly.  If not it needs 
some more painterly softening.
