That's close to matching my one experience.  We were less than 1/4 mile 
from home on a suburban street.  It was about 9 pm on an early fall 
night.  I had just turned right from a stop sign and started 
accelerating.  I couldn't have been going more than 25mph, more likely 
20.  A doe ran out from between two houses straight into the side of my 
car and essentially killed herself.

I never hit them but, when I lived in Woodstock, NY (yes, that 
Woodstock) when I would come home late on snowy winter nights I would 
often find a herd of deer just standing in the road.  They never seemed 
intimidated by the car or the headlights.  I had to drive very slowly 
through the herd before they would move out of the way.  Escaped cows 
weren't much better. :-)
