First of all, NEVER veer for deer. Rollovers kill people, bent hoods don't.

What is so common, is that the animal will dart across the road, and
then decide at the last moment to turn back. I've seen this many times
where the deer is able to get all the way over to the side of the road
and then decide that it's better back on the other side and is instant
venison steak. Raccoons and possoms are notorious for this.

The other problem is that a deer trying to run on pavement usually has
very poor traction. They'll either slip and fall down a bit (which
happened to me, which is why the hood survived) or they'll just leap
into the air.

I wouldn't say that speed had anything to do with my last collision,
but it didn't have anything to do with my previous three or four. One
I hit several years ago at 20 mph.
