The car-based chassis Jeeps are pretty much worthless. No thank you. I
am still very partial to the Grand Cherokees. As to the BMW being my
best bet, she's already located a couple to look at. :) I found one
here that was in my price range, but half the vehicle I had. It had a
manual tranny, which isn't a bad thing for me, but with the
combination of fly-by-wire throttle and a wierd grab point in the
clutch, it was not a smooth driving experience. Also, it had some
issues that needed addressing.

Siddiq, my 2004 was very similarily equipped. It had most of the
upgrades. Not sure about the AWD though. I think there were actually
three 4WD systems produced in 2004, with one being a standard open
center diff with power bias split. The mid-grade one having some
adaptive control on the diff and traction control utilizing the wheel
brakes. The third level, went all out and had some other odd things
going on. In the USA, I don't think the low grade one was ever sold.
Mine was the second. With mine, the power would primarily go to the
rears, but then the center diff would lock in and all four tires were
powered about equally. When off roading, the brakes would stop wheel
spin. Several times, I had the X5 teetering on just one front and one
rear tire with the opposite corners hanging in the air. No problem,
traction control kept it moving without hesitation.

No, I have no interest in the V8 engine. I really really like the gas
mileage I was getting and it was still plenty fast enough for me.
