I get on a plane tonight and fly down to Memphis, and then tomorrow
afternoon ride down to Clarksdale, MS to photograph a birthday concert for
Sir Mack Rice, one of the original Stax Records artists, at Morgan
Freeman's "Ground Zero Blues Club."

A friend of mine is putting this show together, and asked if I'd like to
come photograph it.

Took until he said "it" for me to say "Hell, yes!" I've become extremely
interested in Stax and Memphis soul in the past couple of years, and there
is no better way to soak it up than to jump right in and surround yourself
with the real thing for a weekend.

I'm packing the E-M5, the FL-50 and FL-600r, along with the following glass:

Panny 20/1.7
d. Zuiko 12-50
OM 35/2.8, 50/2.8, and 100/2.8.

I've never been to the club, so I'm not sure how big, so I have a nice
assortment of focal lengths. I will be reading up on that focus-peaking
trick this afternoon and give it a shot.

Needless to say, I'm hoping to come back with a couple of SD cards full of
wonderfulness. At the very least, I'm going to hear some awesome music,
played by some of the best there are.

Not bringing the MacBook Pro with me, so I'll post after I get back.

Only glitch so far - when I booked through Hotwire a month ago, I saw two
choices for flights. One was 8AM which meant getting to ORD at 6AM, which
meant leaving my house around 4:30AM, which is not the number I like to see
on a clock...

The other one I SWEAR said 10AM, so I clicked it. It was only later when
Sheri was reviewing my plans and asked me why I was leaving so late that I
noticed that I had actually booked a 10PM flight....which means I lost a
half-day that I was going to spend photographing Memphis and visiting the
Civil Rights museum at the old Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, where the Stax
guys used to all hang out because it was the ONLY place in Memphis which
had a swimming pool that allowed African-Americans. It's also the place
where Dr. King was shot, and it's now a memorial/museum. I was also going
to see either Sun Records or the Stax museum, but I'll have to make do with
Sunday now.

Oh, well. Next time, I let the wife do the travel bookings....
