Do you really mean lion - that's quite old now and I would recommend
mavericks if it's possible for your machine to run it.
I never liked lion but anyway with mail you may want to switch back to
classic view which is done in preferences - viewing - tick use classic
layout
as for the path I have that displayed in the bottom of the finder
window, I don't have a copy of lion to hand so cant remember how I set
to do that, to disable the icons though , try the following finder -
view - show view options then untick show icon preview
