SHUTTER SHOCK
Dpreview say "And thankfully, the image shake issue that has plagued some
Olympus cameras does not appear to be a
problem in the E-M1 as compared to the E-P5."
The M1 is a heavier camera, and most of their use was with the large, heavy
12-40mm F2.8 lens. So it's anybody's guess
whether Oly has improved the shutter or greater weight reduces the issue. DPR
doesn't mention any specific testing for
shutter shock.
I still saw it at some shutter speeds with the relatively heavy 75-300 on the
M5. Most likely answer is that it may be
better, but not gone. I've seen no mention of a redesigned shutter.
I went with the Panny GX7, in part because I have no need for the extra
size/weight/cost of adding 4/3 lens PD focusing,
and didn't want to pay for it. I can say with assurance that there is no
vibration issue at all with the electronic shutter.
I personally have as yet experienced no distortion of images with the ES. The
mechanical shutter is, of course,
available at any speed, so may be used outside the 1/60-1/200 range. I've set
up an Fn key to switch quickly.
VIEWFINDER
As to the VF, I don't recall having trouble with delay. OTOH, the 1/8 shutter
shock delay is more significant, and I
almost always have it on. It's quick and easy to switch on the SCP, but I tend
to forget. I guess I don't shoot much
stuff that's moving/changing fast. :-) I even forgot to turn it off for the
hummingbird images I recently posted - and
only got a couple of shots of background with no bird, and one of the bird
leaving the frame.
DPR say, "The E-M1 also gains the excellent 2.3M-dot electronic viewfinder
panel we first saw as the VF-4 accessory for
the PEN E-P5 .." and "The high resolution viewfinder is also very good - giving
a very DSLR-like view of the world. The
large size and fast refresh rate make it rather pleasant to use ..."
So, a search for reviews and reports on the performance of the VF-4 in this
regard might answer your questions.
I've used the M5 viewfinder in mid day sun many, many times, with my glasses
on, with no difficulty I can recall. If you
have trouble, I guess I'm not the one to ask. :-) And again, some reviewer
(s?) commented on a similar problem with
the GX7, which I've not yet experienced. My only trouble with these EVFs is the
same as with SLRs, lower sun coming at
my eye from the side. At least now it doesn't go into the viewfinder and mess
up the exposure.
