I never spent much time in Win 8, immediately downloading 8.1 to get the Start
button and other things I had gotten used to on my daughter’s laptop. Windows
has a store, Apple has a store, Google has a store. I guess I don’t hold MS to
a different sort of game, and it’s all easy enough to get rid of or neutralize.
I was initially peeved that I could not find things more quickly, such as
programs (!), but as you say, modification -- and that’s easy enough.

Using Win8.1 seems to previous Windows systems as using a modern digital SLR to
an old manual SLR. Tricks from the old system enhance the experience of the
new, if you want to look at it that way.

The Win8 initial screen is designed for kids used to phones and to sell
MS crap. I don't appreciate paying $$$ and then getting a sales pitch.
Win8.1 actually works pretty well on my tablet with massive
modification. It really sucks on a "real" computer however. First thing
I did was to delete all the crap off the start screen on both the tablet
and the "real" computer and go directly to the desktop. The main gripe
is that some basic utilities are buried by the gui. Partially solved by
links on the Quick Launch bar.
