Yes, in the olden days when dinosaurs roamed the earth, ring voltage
used to be insanely high. Many a lineman was given a poke.

These days, stateside, we have everything nailed down to -48vdc for
in-house power. This is starting to very very slowly move over to an
AC distribution system with AC-DC conversion in only the racks that
need it. It cuts down on the size of cable required for power. All new
data centers are AC based with DC done this way. The bad thing is the
loss of rack space for power and battery string.
