Agreed.  There is no free lunch.  But I only buy the lunch I can afford 
and tastes good enough for me.  :-)

ps: A 10:1 zoom range is huge and has lots of optical compromises but 
not nearly as much as it was 30 years ago.  Restricting the aperture and 
counting on boosting the ISO also helps considerably... along with the 
ashperical elements and higher refractive index of modern glasses.
