It was just you choose not to, does not mean you don't have to. As far as I
remember you show us some indoor images from Guatemala suffered from extreme
contrast with the subject too dark to rescue. IMHO many of them could do
better with fill or bounce flash (even off the wood).

With film at high magnification most likely you will need flash. And many of 
the insects are hide under leaves and trees.

With digital (high ISO) or open shade it may be ok without flash.
