I have always used SyncBack for ordinary backup (and there is a free 
version of that).

I never used Acronis for ordinary backup, only for cloning the boot 
drive.  It was an old version that ran fine on XP.  It was the update to 
64 bit Win 7 that caused me to look for a newer version of Acronis but I 
found nothing but really ugly comments about the newer versions.  That's 
when I started looking for something better.
