Thanks for the links, Scott. I've briefly looked them over and will dig
into them more after I get home if needed. I actually did have Linux
printing to my Win7 connected Brother & HP printers at home several
months ago but don't remember how I did it and I never made a permanent
install. I think it was dependent on running Mint which seemed to have
all the Windows networking bits in place right out of the box. I do
know that Ubuntu and Zorin couldn't do it out of the box.

I managed to get Puppy Linux up and running on my wireless network here
in Florida but didn't have enough play time (when the wife wasn't using
her laptop computer) to figure out how to get it to connect to the
wireless HP printer. I think it's just a matter of plunking the right
URLs into the right places. Note that neither Ubuntu, Mint nor Zorin
could connect wirelessly to my router out of the box. I was impressed
that Puppy Linux did.

Actually, since my plan for the re-purposed laptop is that it will only
*ever* connect with 2 banks and 2 investment houses I think I'd probably
be good to go even with WinXP as is with no further MS support. If I
can't trust that these 4 sites aren't infected all is lost anyhow. If
not, what am I not thinking of?

Thanks,
Chuck Norcutt
