Here in Iowa, we have this tiny little annual shindig called RAGBRAI.
Every few years, we go through a spate of high-end bicycle thefts.
Basically, you can "custom order" any kind of bike ever made.

It's gotten better as the awareness has improved and people will keep
an eye on their stuff, but it's still not unusual to have a few
high-end rides vanish into thin air. The problem is that with the
massive rolling sea of humanity, a person can disappear into the crowd
in seconds.

I've done a couple of day-ride segments in RAGBRAI and found it highly
nerve-wracking. You are in a constant state of passing and being
passed by other riders. The only way to avoid the crowd is to try and
wake up before them and ride fast. Or wake up late and get run over by
the sag wagons.

The smart people, with hyper-expensive rides, will do something
cosmetic to the bike to either make it appear like junk or add
something unique, like a beheaded stuffed animal dressed in drag. (I'm
not kidding). People tend to remember something like that. So, when
you are passed by a decapitated teddy bear in high-heals, you tend to
remember what the rider looked like.
