I'm sorry for your tribulations, old chap. One measure that sometimes works is
to connect the drive to a Mac. The Mac OS used to have to jump through hoops
to ensure its compatibility with other OSs and this facility is sometime useful
in reading volumes, of any sort that Winders will ignore.
But you have to find someone with a Mac and the requisite connecting cable.
