Paul, sunset looks like a perfect time of day to shoot. I would place him
on the grass to the left of the frame and have him look at the lens for
some, camera right for some.  Available light, a few with just a kiss of
flash.  Or maybe light him with headlights from a car.  Maybe get up a
little on a short ladder to show the shield a little better.  Same lens you
used for the scouting shot.
