If the locos are all together, the MU cables are all connected. Since
the locos are driven by electric traction motors in the trucks that get
power from diesel-driven generators up in the body, there are simply
speed/rotation sensors on the motors or the wheels that all speak back
to the computer, along with electronic engine control for the diesel
prime movers.
If you've got a really long train with helpers in the middle and helpers
on the end, they all transmit the speed/rotation data through radio links.
