Microsoft does employ some sophisticated protection mechanisms in Windows and IE but coverage of these methods is not 100%. For those interested here's how the recent exploit of IE went down.
From the folks who discovered it <http://www.fireeye.com/blog/?p=5312>
and some detail about how one of the protection mechanisms ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) was bypassed. <http://www.fireeye.com/blog/technical/cyber-exploits/2013/10/aslr-bypass-apocalypse-in-lately-zero-day-exploits.html>

It's all too sneaky for me.

Microsoft has enough at risk that they do take threats seriously. This
isn't 1998 any more. Exploder isn't nearly as bad as the reputation
holds it as. Frankly, I've had far more problems, issues and virus
attacks through Firefox than I have through Explorer. To each his/her
own, but frankly, everything gets nailed once in a while. Just choose
two systems to work with and use one until an uncorrected attack is
identified and switch over to the other. Just go back and forth.

The two mega-giant corporations I've worked for this year both ban
Firefox on computers because of security flaws. We are able to only
use it selectively and have our systems targeted for extra virus
scans.
