Jim,
Did you update to from a prior version of Excel when you made the XP to W7
move? I seem to recall that a feature similar to what you describe was a part
of the older Office suite but when the ribbon interface was introduced they
'retired' that option. Frustrating!
The closest I can suggest is the jump lists feature that are part of W7 to
provide a similar quick access to regularly worked with documents. They appear
in two places, the first is for items pinned in the start menu and the second
on pinned taskbar items. In the case of the start menu jump lists you may need
to extend the number shown in the properties for the start menu then select
customize to access the dialog for that setting. This only works for items
pinned to the start menu, not those in the deeper programs list. For pinned to
taskbar items you can right click on any one then you will see a list of recent
and frequently used items and have the option to pin them to that list. You can
pin items to the start menu and the taskbar by right clicking on them in the
programs list.
My personal working preference is the taskbar method for day to day stuff but
often use start menu pinned items for less frequently used programs.
