Nice shot, but looks troubling. The warning sign is already battered!

I asked around and found out that 30 to 40 years old is pretty
accurate. Prior to the buried cable, nearly everything out in the
country was "party line". This cable will never be replaced with
another copper cable, only fiber. How soon? This is the first time in
the history of telecommunications that we are expecting to get a 50
year effective life span out of the outside plant. Prior to that,
20-25 years was the expected norm. Putting it into the ground made a
huge difference. Granted, we get "backhoe fade", but that's localized
and a couple hundred feet of cable takes care of that. Also, by
keeping it in the ground, we don't lose as much of it from copper
thieves.

Speaking of, last year, we had a segment of telephone line
stolen--twice. The guys were caught the second time in the act. What
they didn't know was that the telephone line went down to the law
enforcement center where 911 calls are answered and the police
officers are RADIO dispatched. When the lines went dead the second
time (two weeks after the first time), the dispatcher got on the radio
and said "they're stealing our phone line again". The police new
exactly where to go and caught them.

Two years ago, in eastern Kentucky, we lost SEVEN MILES of cable in one night.
