I agree with Tina. If there's a direct impact to the area of the front element the filter won't protect it. The filter is usually only a millimeter or so away from the front element. It will do exactly as happened to Bill... the filter shards scratch the glass that's supposed to be protected. All of my lenses wear hoods and the hoods are always installed whenever possible including when in a carrying case for the lens or with lens installed on the camera. Maybe just good luck but I've never had a lens damaged. Leave the filters off unless they're actually doing some real work like filtering light.

Would you deliberately take a photo through a window if you didn't have to?
Why add two more surfaces that collect dust? If the lens is any good, it
will be better than any filter at repelling scratches. A lens hood is a
much better protection device and also helps with flare!! No to UV
filters, Yes to lens hoods.

We all tend to develop our own habits when working with the tools of our
craft. In general I put a quick release plate on my cameras, take the neck
strap off and go naked on the front of my lens. When I recently bough a
NEX 7 I bought UV filters for both of my expensive lenses with relatively
large front elements. A few minutes ago as I was carrying the 10-18mm to
put
it in my stash cabinet, I hit my hand on the edge of the couch, knocking
the
lens out. I landed on the wood floor destroying the lens cap, UV filter
and putting a couple of gouges in the front element. Double ugh! Don't
know what the lesson is, however it is insured. Wonder if there was some
bad
camera karma from putting the UV filter on the front of the lens. Bill
