[OM] Advice on Wyoming

In August, I'm planning on taking DD#1 to Wyoming for a week or so.
Camping, hiking, photography, writing, etc.

In the spirit of cost-containment, and adventure, we'd like to do
back-country camping (tent, 4wd) and would like to stay away from
where all the crowds are. Yet be able to hang out around streams,
mountain tops (mutually exclusive, I know) and other places of unique
beauty.

We're probably looking at two or three places to go camping and day
hiking to wherever. Day hikes would be to a maximum distance of six
miles each direction. (or so).

While Yellowstone would certainly be a great idea, the crowds are
insane and there is no practical way to free camp. It's also a bit
longer distance.

If the 4wd locations aren't TOO rambunctious, we'll take the BMW X5 as
it gets better gas mileage and is more comfortable for travelling.
Otherwise, we'll take the Jeep Grand Cherokee. (Too rambunctious means
"must use low range"). I'm leaning towards the Jeep just because I
like the freedom it provides.

She's going into her senior year of high school, and I've promised to
take each daughter on our own father-daughter adventure and she
selected Wyoming. (It was either that or backpacking and she equated
that with a death march).

So, I'm enlisting the help of the "collective" here and asking for
advice and locations in the eastern half (not restricting to it, but
would be interested in keeping gas costs reasonable) of Wyoming.
