[OM] Digital B&W Photography with the E-500/510

After two weeks of experimenting, I have to admit that I am stumped when
it comes to using filters with the monotone function in the E-500/510. When I
take photos with glass filters, they all seem to come out the same regardless
of what filter I use, except whe using a red #25. In that case, the photo
comes out with far less contrast. That gives me the impression that the camera
is taking a colour photo and then processing it as a B&W image, which renders
the glass filter as useless.

If I use the internal emulated filters there is no difference when going
from no filter to green, yellow, orange, and then red. So, it is obvious that
I am missing something here. Perhaps the contrast setting of zero has nulled
out the filtering?

The manual provides no guidance on this issue, and the online blogs are
equally uninformative. There is one webaite that provides guidance for
infrared imagery with the E-510:

but there are enormous gaps in the steps from one point to the next.

It's painfully obvious that I have missed something when going from film
to digital B&W photography, and I would really like to find an online resource
such as "Digital B&W Photogaphy 101". I would hate to have to hack my way
through this by fiddling with the in-camera controls one at a time to figure
this out.

At some point I would like to be as capable with digital B&W as I had been
with film.
