He may well be facing an almost insurmountable task. He mentions that the
9-year-old software would not run on the newer equipment. Without being
able to run the old software, he likely cannot get a functional restoration
of a backup copy of the list as a baseline for upgrading. Trying to restore
the old list backup to an upgraded version of the list software probably
means he's in for what amounts to a major amount of conversion work, all
step-by-meticulous-step, and "by hand", and slowly. Hence the plea for a
world-class python expert.

There are a few ways I expect the job could be accomplished, assuming he
has useful--and very complete--backups. As one example, and assuming that
the intermediate versions of the software are available, I'd suggest
finding someone with an old machine that could be used temporarily and of
the proper vintage to run the older version of the software from backup.
Then run updates to the point where there is a new enough version to
transfer and have operational on the new machine. It may also be possible
to do something similar on a new machine running virtualization software to
emulate the older machine.

And finally, he could decide that it simply isn't worth it to try and
recreate the list, to the point of failure. One could choose to install the
latest version software, or switch to something new, and simply refer folks
to the archives for the old stuff. There are pretty obvious drawbacks to
that, but some benefits, too. The largest benefit is being back on line.
Every day off-line probably means permanently losing more subscribers. I
don't know if the LUG was partially supported by advertising. If it was,
those subscribers are important.
