I actually own both CS6 and LR5. In fact I've owned many versions of LR over the years but never started one up in earnest (let it create a library) until last night. I handed it the top level folder for my existing images (a by date folder structure) and let it run for 3 hours. I really have no clue what it did except that it appears to have created a "collection" of some 65,000 images with no differentiation that I can see. My original date structure seems to be inaccessible. I hope that's not what I have to use in the future.

Yes, I understand that there's no problem for me at the moment. I just wish I knew what the problem will be in the future since I'm convinced there will be one.

We are talking hypothetically, about what might be to come, after you have
bought a boxed latest version of LR, but without having upgraded PSCS6. ACR
supplied with CS6 will have been superseded, and the version supplied with
LR is that newer ACR (you wouldn't have bought LR f that wasn't the case).
It's the position I was in before I upgraded to CS6 - CS5's ACR would not
open the raw files from the camera I had, but LR would. I had to open them
in LR before doing any edits in PS - CS5 could not take advantage of the
newer ACR in LR.

But keep in mind Mike Gordon's comment that for now, Adobe are updating the
CS6 ACR, so there isn't a problem yet.

Is there compatibility between the versions of ACR supplied in Lightroom and
those in PhotoShop? Or would raw conversion require operating in Lightroom
first and then moving to PS?

Partly erroneous, Chuck. PS is no longer available as a boxed product.
LR is, and AIUI will continue to be so.

Their past practice with PS was to allow upgrades to (for example) CS5
from
CS2,3 or 4. They discontinued that at least a year ago, so you could
upgrade to CS6 only from CS5. That limitation does not apply to LR -
any prior version is OK. And that is the "past practice" I had in
mind, although I wasn't assuming anything!

It was my assumption (perhaps erroneous) that henceforth PS and LR or
their upgrade versions will no longer be available as something I can
buy. You
say: "If they continue their past practice with LR..." Why do you
assume that? Why would I not also assume that they will continue
their past practice with PS and I can continue as I always have?

If I'm happy with the function of PS6 and I can get a copy of the most
recent ACR by occasionally popping $75 for a Lightroom upgrade I'd be
happy and not bother with the $10/month tax.

1 By signing up for the Creative Cloud Photography subscription, but
you knew that. Currently $10 per month with a minimum term of one
year, and no sign of that pricegoing up, on the contrary they keep

to
qualify for it.
2 By upgrading to the latest version of Lightroom. Currently $75 at
B&H (but included with PSCC in the subscription, as you also know).
If they continue their past practice with LR, you will be able to
upgrade
LR5 to LR 6, 7 or whatever.

Both options include the latest ACR, and minor upgrades to it .

But is there something I missed in your question?

2-3 years from now how will I be able to acquire a new version of ACR?

If you don't use LR what might be the point, Chuck? I'd do so only

Adobe keeps sending me reminders that I should pay the $9.99

But I don't know what I'd do if Olympus delivers a full-frame
mirrorless camera 3 years from now and I don't have a version of ACR
to support it since I am an ACR junkie at this point.

What say y'all. Pay up or.... ???
