As a stock photographer you need that catalog, I don't. And if you think LR can now do almost as much as PS you certainly don't make much use of PS function. The two are night and day apart.

I have two LR catalogs - 2014 and Archive. 2014 has my current photos that
I've taken this year and am now editing and keywording. It has 66, 961
photos and is pretty fast. My Archive catalog has everything else. All of
the digital photos in Archive have been edited and keyworded, but I am
constantly working on the scans. All of my files either start out as DNGs
or are converted as they are imported. That catalog has 257,565 photos
but I can still find anything in a matter of seconds. I can also find any
photo taken with a certain camera or certain lens, on a particular day or
at any hour, with any keyword, including type of film or digital file. As
far as processing goes, LR can now do almost everything that PS can and
corrections can be applied to any selected photos. I think it is the
greatest bargain in photo software and use it every day. I don't think I
could work without LR.

Rant, sort of

What I don't understand is why some of you are so reluctant to allowing
the program to do its thing i.e. importing by dates - so long as you have
typed adequate keywords on upload, you'll always retrieve photos in a
second.
Why try to force the software into your past habits? just as if one
immediately tried to reprogram the gearbox on a new car - does any of you
do that? if you do, why did you buy that car?

I have no stakes in the company but this program does its things right for
me who hates to know what happens behind the screen; I suffered too much
under DOS and its followers not to fully appreciate the user-friendliness
of today's offers.

End of rant

Now the tips:

- trust LR to do its thing (sorting, ordering, etc) properly
- keep the file names short
- add keywords as soon as you can - on upload (preferred) or later on in
batches, then refine as you go while editing. FYI you don't need to even
tell the program about the gear used, it knows about it, except for scans.
- create collections after upload and edition (batch <=> 5sec.), e.g.
"Christmas 1776", "Family portraits", "BW", "lens tests", "butter & flies",
etc. These can be recalled anytime by one click, and edited.
- use the time you've now saved on technical issues for photography and
for sharing a drink with friends ;-)

I do that for myself, but also for Alice; she can retrieve photos she
needs for the job even when I'm not in. Life in the easy lane.

Hope this helps.
