     The pines here in Phoenix and elsewhere in the desert are Aleppo Pine 
(Pinus halepensis), which comes from the Mediterranean.  There also some 
Mongolian Scotch Pine (Pinus Sylvestris), but I don't know the difference as 
they are not native, just cultivated species.

     I've seen Poderosa Pine three feet in diameter yanked out of the ground by 
tornadoes, tap root and all.  I've also seen the aftermath of one being struck 
by lightning.  No end of firewood, in all sizes and in every direction.
