Are people still using them or are they last weeks technology? I have a stupid fone so don't use them myself and never visit places where peole might. Do ithings or android phones come with the app installed? If not I'd post a link but doubt people would use it.

I'm thinking of using them at a few trailheads around here which have cell reception with the admonition to get it (map) here while you can. We've numerous people getting lost in the maze of trails. We do provide paper maps but the expense is an issue and they go out of date so we can't buy too many at a time.

Worked for me on iPhone. Instant map on WiFi; probably much slower where you
are talking about.

I'd like to make a map available for download that would allow tracking with the phone gps. Anyone know where to start? I'm a total noob.

I have no idea how to do that. There are apps that can use imported maps, but I don't know which, specifically, might suit, nor what the map format is.

BTW, I recommend the free YouNeedAMap iThing app to anyone who gets out in the wilds out of comm. range. It has a map of the US built in, and GPS, so you can always know where you are. It does Tracks, so one may backtrack if lost. At the trail split you don't remember, you can see which way you came from, etc. One of the most useful apps I have, and often used.

I've read warnings about GPS tracking running down the battery fast. So I carry a spare battery charger thingie. I've only needed it once, and that wasn't desperate. Still, they are really cheap. I also used it for Carol's iPhone, but that was just 'cause she forgot to charge it. :-)
