     Exactly right.  Nursery stock of 5- or 10-gallons should be the limit, 
then encourge sufficient root growth by watering in a circular trench just 
beyond the canopy of the tree as it grows.

     But, most people here want "instant landsacping" and opt for the 25- to 
40-gallon transplanted boxed specimens, which never root sufficiently no matter 
what you do.
