Tina, I helped a friend acquire and set up a Precision II a couple of years
ago, and from the evidence of my own eyes can confirm that the dynamic range
(never mind the resolution) it will extract will easily exceed most other
scanners in the price range. I have a Nikon 4000 as well as an Epson 4990,
and am confident that the PII will leave them both standing in terms of
image quality - but I think you are quite right to plan on using the Nikon
batch feeder for most of the work, because that is where the Nikon leaves
the PII standing (almost literally). You didn't mention which film holders
the scanner includes - beware, they can be pretty expensive if you don't
have the holders you need!

>From the replies so far, I can see that you have had some good advice, and
some really generous offers. The one that stands out is Doug Herr's, as that
is the "missing link" between the PII and more modern PCs (even though
Firewire is no longer "modern") and if I read the auction listing correctly,
the seller has not ever used it with the USB adaptor cable he has sold to
you (and did you notice that, if your seller is in Tempe AZ, he already
sold the same scanner two weeks ago?). In those circumstances I would
strongly suggest going the SCSI-Firewire adaptor route, which is a proven
solution (and the fact that adaptors are getting very hard to come by
suggests that they are being used, not disposed of).

Be aware also that you do *not* want to download the latest version of the
Flexcolor software provided for use with the Imacon/Hasselblad scanners.
>From memory version 4.0.4 is the latest version which will run with
SCSI-interface scanners. But Flexcolor almost certainly is the best tool to
get the best from the PII, even if you transfer the scan files to Photoshop
for further work.

Also be aware that they can be somewhat temperamental to get set up, but
there is an active, though not busy, Yahoo group "Imaconusers" with a few
very helpful and knowledgeable members, one or two of whom offer consulting
and tutoring services. Gerry Yaeger comes to mind - see
www.TheDigitalCoach.com - although San Diego might not be the closest to
you!

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Piers

PESO:

I know I'll never be able to afford the Flextight 5, so when this one came
up on EBay, I bid on it, after reading reviews and doing lots of research
about whether it would still work on today's computers. Today, I won the
bid and should have the scanner next week. The sample scans that the guy
posted looked very good and he is including all of the cables and film
holders that I should need.

My plan is to still use the Nikon LS5000 for cataloging and editing the vast
majority of my slides with the batch loader. The Hasselblad would be used
for problem slides like the Velvia and some Kodachromes that I have posted
lately.

What do you think?

Tina
