On the subject of Flying Things . . .

There was a Family Fun Day at RAF Wyton yesterday, where I now fly part-time as
an instructor or Air Experience pilot – air experience for young cadets in the
Air Training Corps. They had a Spitfire to visit from the Battle of Britain
Memorial Flight and he joined the circuit on a "visual run in and break" ("a
pitch into the closed" is how the USAF term it sometimes) just as I was getting
airborne in my little Grob Tutor with my 4th cadet of the morning, a personable
17 year-old chap. As I turned out of the circuit the Spitfire was only 300yds
away on the break, large and dark in plan form. This was a very exciting
moment for the cadet and I reckon was probably a once in a lifetime moment: to
be airborne next to a historic aircraft like that.

We saw an Apache below us a few minutes later on, but I don't think that that
was quite as much of a moment :-)

Chris
