Have you actually beeen doing image stacking for DoF? If so, what software have you been using?

I tried it a while ago, with some open source app. As usual with such things, it was a bit fussy to figure out, but did a pretty good job.

Not very useful outside. Even the slightest breeze, the subject moves, and there's trouble getting a good result. I can't imagine it working with a live insect, for example.

As I'm seldom interested in a complex set-up to shoot something static indoors, I've not tried it since. I do have various focusing stage devices, so that part is easy, if one wants precisely spaces slices without changing image size much.

I think PhotoShop is capable of such but haven't tried it.

I occasionally shoot 2-3 shots focused at different depths, hoping that one will work. If not, I can usually combine a couple manually with masks.

I see PS can automagically merge/stack images for focus.

The guy in this tutorial doesn't bother with a focusing stage, just refocuses. <http://photography.tutsplus.com/articles/focus-stacking-made-easy-with-photoshop--photo-12621> As refocusing changes image size, his good result would appear to mean PS does quite a good job of adjusting images to match each other.

If I remember, and remember the two steps, I'll try it next time. As I'm usually shooting hand held, I may have to get them close first.
