US social security number secret? Hahahaha! Piers, you are too funny. It's
"not to be used for identification" (printed right on the damn card) but
pretty much always has been. All sorts of things require it (credit
applications and the like) or did require it. One might as well consider it
as public as a common land-line telephone number.
