It could be black anodized, anodized surface is rather strong.
Steel? It is heavy and hard to work on, try with a magnet.

While I can't swear that it's not aluminum it does not feel like aluminum
to me. I see no wear on the mounting tabs that lock into the body. I
think aluminum would be showing wear already.
As to machined slots for the lens mount I think the best thing to do is
use an adapter for each lens. The adapters are very cheap and that will
minimize lens changes.

Many cheap adapters just make a slot (three slots) on the mounting plate
to provide spring force to hold the lens. It could fatigue after some
uses and the lens holding force will be reduced but you may enlarge the
slots again with thin metal (e.g. small flat screwdriver). All the lens
adapter I have use this type of slots except the "RJ Camera" Pen to M4/3
adatper which has real steel springs.
Searching ebay I found two OM-NEX adapters look like using steel

I know next to nothing about the A7 adapter but noticed Big_is as a
possible supplier. I've been buying all my adapters (Leica, Minolta
MD, T2, and OM to Canon or micro 4/3 bodies) from Big_is for the past
5 years or so. I've never been disappointed. His Sony E mount
adapter looks like a larger version of the micro 4/3 adapters I've
bought... all of which fit well. And should it turn out that you get
a bad one or just don't like it just throw it out. For $7.33 it's
hard to go wrong. The bodies of the adapters including the lens flange
tabs appear to all be steel. I assume the lens adapter end is chrome
plated brass. No plastic, at least in the micro 4/3 adapters.
Good luck, and report how it all works and how you get along with the
A7.

I recently acquired a Sony A7 to upgrade to full frame,from using OM

A quick search on ebay found a large number of vendors, with prices

Fotoga seems the most common low cost manufacturer offered.
Pixco also seems common,but the Pixco adapters vary a bit in the
detail design shown in pictures.
Some adapters are tapered on exterior, others are straight with
stepped interior.
Some seem to have some baffling or threading/ridges, to reduce flare,
others do not.
most have OM mount in bright plated brass, a few others dark coated
(to reduce flare?) , (maybe to cut cost with anodized Al finish?)
My previous experience with adapters is ,some of them have rather
loose tolerance, so lens wobbles when locked in place or worse they
don't lock reliably.
Flare is a problem with sensor reflections,so the dull mount may well
be and advantage?
Some of adapters have stop down screws that can be removed,if you
want to use the OM squeeze shutdown tab.
Others have more robust flat metal stop down tab, but it is not
obviously removable?
