Yes, the same would be the case with a Windows machine. I suspect you're correct but would not readily agree unless I knew what sort of communication took place between the BIOS and the USB device that would definitively prevent the USB device from assuming control once its code was activated by the BIOS. I'm not familiar with Macs but in the case of a Linux machine it maybe be booting on the same hardware as the Windows machine.
