Chris,
   That's twice in the last week or so that you have mentioned "The War of
the Worlds". I'm assuming you are a fan of the genre and of Well's novel.
If so I have a treat for you. I came across this story in a collection from
the early 90's. It was written by one of the best SF short story writers
that no one has ever heard of, Harold Waldrop. His is a little know side
story to the H.G. Wells classic in which a few of the Martian invader
crafts lose there way and make landfall in late 19th century West Texas.
The results are a bit different than what transpired in the suburbs of
London. Take note; Waldrop has a great big shaggy sense of humor. Enjoy:
