The truth of what you say about shooting conditions is (for me) right here. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Adams_The_Tetons_and_the_Snake_River.jpg> This "Snake River" shot is my favorite shot from Ansel Adams. When we were visiting Yellowstone and the Tetons several years ago I just had to drive down and find the spot where Adams took this photo. Finding it was very easy and there is even a formal viewing spot there to commemorate it.

Unfortunately, I could only be there on a randomly chosen day and only in mid-afternoon. I took an 8-image pano (2vx4h) at 200mm to gather lots of detail. Although it was fall and the aspens and pines were lovely yellows and greens the sky was almost cloudless. The image is a very detailed, properly exposed... blah! On the other hand, Adams spent 3 weeks at that spot waiting for just that shot with the moon and clouds clearing after a winter storm. Knowing exactly where he took the shot was basically useless.

But it has been nicely captured again by others. This is Clyde Butcher's similar photo... taken on his 8th visit to the same spot. <http://www.clydebutcher.com/image/262> Note that Butcher's shot doesn't capture the river in the foreground. Neither does mine. Adams used to do his shooting from a platform on the top of his station wagon. That probably explains part of the better view of the river but not all of it. Over the many years since Adams took his shot the trees have grown up to obscure it.

I'm not sure how useful it would be, anyway. Each location includes an
image, before you pay to find out exactly where it was taken. But time,
of day, year, and weather are such huge factors. I know exactly where at
least one of his Acadia shots was taken. I've been there several times -
and it looked nothing like his shot.

I expect more than a few people will end up disappointed.

OTOH, I have a shot and a pano of Bass Harbor Marsh on the Island that
is spectacular. The location is not at all hard to find, right on a main
road. I've been to the same spot many times, before and since, as has
Bob (Sorry, Bob, but remember Birch Alley!), and it's never looked close
to as good as that particular combination of light, clouds, tide, etc.

That's the main reason I can't see myself paying for his locations in
any but unusual circumstances.
