On the subject of power consumption, I had a model B+ running off a bench
PSU yesterday - less than half an amp running the lxde desktop, likewise
when running a simple slideshow. That's about 2 watts then. Maybe double
that for a particularly inefficient wall wart. You might even be able to
run it from a smart TV's USB port, if it's man enough to drive a portable
USB HD.

I also had a quick play with feh, a command-line driven slideshow program.
Worked quite well, though its tendency to display non-anti-aliased image
at first and then overwrite with the anti-aliased version when scaling down
was a bit irksome (like some cheap digital picture frames I've seen).
Wouldn't be a problem if one used a big, powerful PC to resize them before
sticking them on the Pi though. Probably the neatest solution for a
switch-on-and-go application, just put a one-line command in /etc/rc.local
or something.

something with a few optional fancy transitions would be nice too, but
haven't found anything like that yet.

Stand firm for what you believe in, until and unless logic and experience
prove you wrong. Remember: when the emperor looks naked, the emperor *is*
naked, the truth and a lie are not "sort-of the same thing" and there is
no aspect, no facet, no moment of life that can't be improved with pizza.
