...just want to get rid of the silly 10 cents/minute long distance charges
when we have an hour long conversation with family members.

Unlike many folks, my wife and I do not much care for our cell phones.
We carry them primarily for communication when we're traveling. We do
not use or need text or data services. The phones are not attached to
our hips ....My take from all of this is to invest in one of Ken's "buggy
whips" to
go along with the type of service I have which is why those particular
"buggy whips" were invented.
Chuck, your cell phone use parallels to mine albeit for slightly different reasons. I don't get any bars here at the house and most places around here lack service. Anyway this is what I do and may save you some $$ _if_ you could relax the requirement for a land-based VOIP. I don't know what your cell service costs per month but friends are paying $50-60/mo and up. Mostly way up. What I did was get a prepaid stupid phone (as opposed to smart phone) and 3x minutes from Tracfone. Basically I get the phone and a couple thousand minutes for a net cost of about $7.50/mo. Now the deal is that I have to add minutes at least once a year to keep rolling over the remaining minutes. So the end of the year is coming and I still have 1900+ minutes left. Seems like calling friends and family would be a good way to burn through a few hours. Add more minutes as needed but I never need to. I just add the minimum amount just before the year is up. For emergency use it works for me. When 19th CenturyLink's pipe to the mainland broke last winter taking out all phone and local towers and was down for nearly 2wks it was our only communication. I had to drive down to the south end and bounce off a tower on the Olympic Peninsula across the Straits. It only works for calls originating from the US but not a problem for you I suspect. What is a pain for me though is that the westside of the island connects through towers on the Saanich Peninsula making all calls international :(

Just a thought. Might save you some pesos if you have an expensive cell plan.
