It is a substantial cost saving for the metal to have embossed ridges for needed strength rather than a structure that requires assembly and many parts. It's a remnant of the Ford Trimotor.

Why would the metal of the fin be ribbed like that? Is it to stiffen thin metal, kept like that for lightness?
