I would say that the greatest aspect of this photograph was just in
taking it. The sky had some interesting aspects to it, but nothing too
exciting. I decided to just grab the camera bag and keys and go for a
quick drive to see if anything jumped out at me. As we live right on
the edge of town, I'm out in the country in less than a minute from
the time I leave my driveway. I went north a couple of miles to the
next paved road (the X5 was reasonably clean, so I didn't want to take
the muddy farm roads). The sky had potential, but nothing worked. I
then went east to the next road and went down it about a half mile to
this spot. I got out, and took five series of panoramic sweeps before
my light left me. At ISO 400, my exposures were something like F3.5 at
1/15 (or slower). No time for a tripod, Just got out and shot.
The light was changing way too fast. I lost at least three stops
between my first sweep and my last one. This was from my second sweep.
