Well said, Scott. I have always avoided Fox and MSNBC for their political partisanship and used CNN as my news source. However, CNN has lately become unbearable for their continuous churning of whatever they can manage to depict as a crisis. The subject won't change until the next manufactured crisis.

One of the best things one can do anymore seems to be to avoid television
news. The constant drumbeat of what turns out to be mostly reports of only
the worst about *any* area give a highly biased view that really doesn't
represent reality.

This is in no way to say that there aren't issues. There are. And they need
to be fixed. But you're far more likely to due in assn accident near home
than in any of the sort of things the need media like to blather on about.
Giving in and avoiding travel is letting the fear-mongering assholes win.

prospect of being flagged down for an alleged traffic infraction, being
tossed into a police cruiser or van and having my spine broken or body
bruised. Sounds crazy? It is a daily occurence being reported on CNN and
Canadian news media.

Ouch. It's been remarkably quiet this year, on the school shooting
front, but the threat is real. As a parent of two high-school
students, it's something that we tend to keep in mind and discuss with
our kids. It was a little close-to-home when I was still working in
Colorado. Had I moved my family out there, the high school that the
girls went to had a shooting itself, and was in the same district as
the most infamous one in recent decades. But where we live, the crime
level is already higher than average, and the threat level also above
average, so everybody takes it more seriously. The attitude of "it
can't happen here" is not our reality. It CAN happen here and we know
it.

A couple of you know our own story, which I'm not at liberty to openly
discuss, but I'll just say that I take this kind of thing VERY
seriously, and our family has been directly involved in getting a
high-risk individual arrested and removed from the campus. There are
reasons why our house is under 24/7 electronic and video monitoring
and has multiple layers of security.

When a student expresses fear or concern, DO take it seriously and
don't diminish his or her feelings. It's real.
