Moose,
I will think about reversing the order. I think I have done it both ways.

As for FM, the current stand-alone software allows you to multiply each step by 25% increments, so it is quite variable. I frequently use Step 2 with a multiplier of 75% to give me Step 1.5, etc.

We must remember that the E-1 only goes up to ISO 800. I was using 400, or half-way to the top, so I expected some noise.

Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for commenting, Moose. This was shot around 1800 local time, so the sun was setting and the light was soft. I went to ISO 400, using Program Mode, to improve the shutter speed and aperture. Exposures like that, with the E-1 usually have some noise. So, in post, I used FM to sharpen, which usually increases the noise, then NI to tame the noise. I sometimes come back for a little FM to finish, but decided not to with this image.

I don't work with E-1 files. But with all Raw files I've processed extensively, I use the reverse work flow. NeatImage first, generally with a little resharpening within NI to get back where I started. So I have less noise and no less detail, unless perhaps high ISO and heavy noise. I then most often do any further sharpening I may need using FM after downsizing for the web.

I don't know what options you have with FM. It doesn't allow intermediate steps, and their steps are rather broad. I use it as a plug-in on a layer in PS, then may fine tune the amount by changing layer opacity.
