Admittedly I haven't tried very hard (like the occasional few seconds you
mentioned) but my results always showed dreadful follow-focussing (on my
Canon p&s and my Nikon SLR). I would just suggest practising and see if you
can get good results.  For sure if it's an almost static subject from a
reasonable distance you're starting off with a good chance - although the
resulting video might be a little boring unless you can interject some
movement/zoom/...
