First of all, for playing videos or movies, I recommend VLC Video Player. It
has all the codecs, filter and splitter included, best for beginner. It
plays almost all types of files.

Personally, I use K-Lite code pack which included a bunch of the above
mentioned stuffs with MPC-HC player. It has more control on the parameters.
I have not much experience in free video editing tools, just played a bit
with Windows Movie Maker, it seems easy to learn but don't know if it
support extra audio clip. My editing program (Pinnacle Studio 15, I use it
since version 7 in 2001) can import extra audio track, by comparing the
waveform of your original recording and the external recorded audio it is
easy to adjust the timing for a good lip sync.

a one-off performance. It also sounds to someone like me (with zero
video/sound editing experience) as a synchronization problem... especially
with cameras that may have started recording some 5-10 seconds apart.
My thought was simply scrolling through the video on the instructor camera
until an audience question was posed, then scroll through the audience
video to the same point and splice the two together until the audience
question is finished, then back to the instructor, etc. Probably not very
professional, no fades or transitions, but I can at least understand the
method with no difficulty.
However, I don't know how to edit a damned thing for video/audio. I
opened up Olympus Viewer 3 thinking it would at least be able to play the
.mov file produced by the camera. No dice. I tried Windows Media Player
which, much to my surprise, choked over the .mov file claiming something
invalid in the file. So I turned to QuickTime which can at least play the
thing. So, I barely have anything that can play the files let alone edit
and combine them. Suggestions? Freebies?

Yes, if I were doing Chuck's project, I would mount my Zoom H2n recorder
on a mike stand in front of the speaker and use the three channel MS
Mode,
designed for exactly this kind of situation. But I doubt he wants to buy
extra equipment for what may be a one time project.
