I had to think about that Jim.  I suppose the vortex generators keep the 
boundary layer moving to keep the flow closer to the wing at higher angles of 
attack; is that the idea?

I see from Wikipedia that it’s to "delay flow separation”: that’s what I meant 
to write :-)
